Refractories for Nonferrous Smelting Furnaces

Begin with the metal, process route and lining position. A copper, lead, zinc or aluminium-related enquiry should not be treated as a single interchangeable material requirement. Selected magnesia-chrome, corundum composite and repair products can be reviewed against the actual process.

Nonferrous smelting furnaces

Describe the metal and the worn lining position, then share the existing material or a photo. Include any composition restrictions and the delivery destination; detailed technical review can follow.

Start with the lining position

01

Melt and slag exposure

Identify whether the part contacts metal, slag, gas or a changing combination. Existing melt or slag analysis and wear records can help the technical review. General labels such as corrosion-resistant do not specify compatibility with every nonferrous process.

02

Atmosphere and lining damage

Describe the furnace atmosphere, changes during the cycle and whether damage appears as chemical wear, erosion, cracking or local impact. Candidate materials need comparison against the same exposure basis; results from another furnace or metal cannot simply be transferred to this job.

03

Repair boundaries and material requirements

For a maintenance area, include repair depth, adjacent lining and application method. The catalogue includes chrome-bearing materials, so state any customer chromium restrictions and whether alternatives need evaluation. Agree the selected composition and documentation during the grade review.

Common enquiry questions

Are these materials suitable for every nonferrous metal?

No. The contact medium, process and lining position must be identified first. A product listed for selected nonferrous positions is not a blanket approval for copper, aluminium or another melt.

Can a chrome-free option be discussed?

State the composition requirement in the enquiry. The technical team can review potential alternatives against the actual process. A replacement should not be assumed equivalent without checking its grade and application basis.

What if a slag analysis is not available yet?

Start with the process, existing material and damage photos. The team can explain what further information would help before a particular grade or supply specification is agreed.
